The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is widely considered to be Africa’s greatest wildlife reserve, the vast grassland plains are scattered with herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle and Topi.The elephants and Buffalo wallow in the wide Musiara swamp whilst The Mara and Talek rivers are brimming with Hippos and crocodiles. These youngsters would have been sired by the lions known as Karibu and Rafiki and have done well to avoid the six Bila-Shaka males that took over the marsh area when they were still young.
Musiara sector offers great game viewing in the Musiara Marsh, as well as some of the most spectular wildebeest crossings at the Mara River, in the southeast of the park and bordered by the sand, Talek and Mara Rivers, the central plains make up the largest part of the reserve.
Musiara swamp has expansive grasslands of the central plains attract vast herd of plains animals, especially during the Great migration from August to October, while the area is also famed for exciting big cat sightings. Within the central plains, the savannah of paradise plain is prime cheetah territory, while Rhino Ridge for black-backed jackals, spotted hyena and bat-eared foxes. Head to lookout Hill for incredible panoramas of the Olpunyai swamp and sightings of hapoos’s well as for scenes of wildebeest crossing the river during the months of the migration. As the closest area to Nairobi and with a huge number of lodges, hotels and camps, the central plains is the most popular area of the reserve for tourists.
Best time to visit Musiara Swamp.
Anytime you can visit Musiara swamp but not in rainy season of March to June, with the months of September and October bringing the migratory wildebeest and zebras herds to the area.

Musiara swamp can be accessed by both road or flight/ air transport means.
By air/flight transport.
By air the nearest option for the first being Musiara airstrip though there are other airstrips in Maasai Mara National Reserve from Nairobi. Its 270 kilometres from Nairobi, Kenya’s capital if you decide to fly in the reserve and then to Musiara swamp and it should take only 40-45 minutes to reach your destination comfortably.
By road transport.
By road transport from Nairobi to Maasai Mara National Reserve then to Musiara swamp takes like approximately six to seven hours.
Here you can drive using a private rental vehicle with 4 times 4 being recommended, and some been available at the hotels, lodges and tented campsites in the area.
Musiara swamp is a great attraction in Maasai Mara National Reserve with loads of animals, birds and insects that live in the swamp, the swamp is also favorite in that it does not have mosquitoes which may disrupt and infect the guests or campers that would have camped near that swamp. Guests who who camp near this swamp enjoys the stay close of Hippo and Crocodile abound the river.
