Bomas of Kenya

Bomas of Kenya is a tourist village in Langata, Nairobi Kenya. Bomas (homesteads) displays traditional villages belonging to the several Kenyan tribes. Bomas of Kenya is a home to one of the largest auditorium in Africa, it is located approximately 10 km from the central Business District. The word Bomas comes from a Swahili word ‘’Boma’’ meaning a homestead hence the word bomas in plural. Bomas was established by the government in 1971 as a subsidiary company of Kenya Tourist Development Corporation as a tourist attraction, it also wanted to preserve, maintain and promote rich and diverse cultural values of various tribal groups of Kenya. Mario Masso is its leader.

This  is a living museum displaying and celebrating the colourful ribs of Kenya, it is a great place to get to know about the lifestyle, music, art and cultural of each tribe in the village. The Bomas of Kenya homestead is opened from 10 am to 6pm. Performances take place from Monday to Friday from 2:30 pm to 4 pm, on the weekends and during the public holidays, performances are from 3:30 pm to 5:15pm. Bomas of Kenya has a series of the cultural shows that promote Kenya’s rich cultural diversity, the fetes create cultural ambassadors from all communities to promote the rich culture beyond borders. The popular bonanza brings together Kenyans from diverse cultural back grounds in the display of the talent in music, dance, theatre, drama, fashion show, poetry recitals, comedies, sports and games, exhibitions, seminars, beauty contests and body building. Bomas of Kenya also aims to preserve, maintain and promote rich and diverse cultural values of various communities. With the growing interest in the cultural heritage, growth in the cultural tourism has increased. As the premier institution in cultural resource preservation and management. They plays a big role in the development and promotion of the cultural tourism in Kenya.

Best time to visit Bomas of Kenya is during the whole year. However, it is better to visit the village during the dry season from July to October and also in January and February.

How to get to Bomas of Kenya.

By Road transport.

They are located 10 km from Nairobi city center, and about 1 km from Nairobi National Park. Bus or matatu 125 or 126 run here from Nairobi train station (Ksh 80, and 30 minutes). Get off at Magadi Road, from where it’s about a kilometer walk, clearly signposted on the right-hand side of the road, and a taxi should coast Ksh. 1500 to 2000.
